![]() ![]() It’s best to teleport somewhere where you can get help getting out of the restraints. But if the restraint is solely on the mage, not attached to, held, or controlled by anything else, it goes with the mage. If the restraint is secured to a wall or other object beyond the weight limit of the Teleport, it stays with the wall/object. If the owner/user is still holding part or has control of it, then it stays with the owner. It’s a close thing – there are reasonable arguments for several rulings.įor us, it came down to who has possession of the rope, manacles, or other restraints. The PHB gives no guidance, so we came up with our own ruling prior to the Psionic’s Handbook. If the DM wants to retain authority to then get arbitrarily nitpicky about the caster's choices. Otherwise, choice is choice, and as long as the weight limit is not exceeded it's up to the caster who or what goes or stays. If, for some reason, you have a STANDING house rule already known to players, something along the lines of, "First add the weight of the caster's own worn gear, then gear they are instead considered to be 'carrying' as opposed to wearing, then other creatures or objects in contact with them in the order of proximity and lowest weight to highest weight." well, then I'd say your caster can't be all that selective about what goes with them and what stays behind. The spellcaster is able to teleport a maximum weight of 250 pounds, plus an additional 150 pounds for each level of experience above the 10th (a 13th-level wizard can teleport up to 700 pounds). If the caster is permitted to choose which individuals to take with them - along with all that individual's gear - then yes, they can teleport WITHOUT ropes, manacles, nets, straightjackets, etc. Distance is not a factor, but interplanar travel is not possible by means of a teleport spell. When this spell is used, the wizard instantly transports himself, along with a certain amount of additional weight that is on or being touched by the spellcaster, to a well-known destination. Also, officially, shackles or restraints are NOT taken along with the teleporter. Officially teleport is a ceases to exist somewhere and begins to exist somewhere else type of transport. The grappler can always ram or drag the grappled wizard to stop them casting.īut if you are already caught, and it’s just a net/manacle set/rope etc that’s holding the wizard, or cleric, then the caster is already stable and not being jostled or distracted. A grapple will interrupt the casting of a spell just like a weapon blow will. The vocalisation has to be fluid and uninterrupted. Yes, there's a weight limit, but I'd still allow the caster to choose what comes with him, within that limit.īut if that's the case, then the whole tactic, developed to FIGHT mages, of 'grapple them, so their weight limit is overloaded', just got totally neutered. I would rule you can leave your chains behind. Otherwise someone would hack it to duplicate magic items and such. ![]() Your original body isn't destroyed, it's just moved. How does it work? I'm of the position that your body 'pops' from one location to another, instantaneously. That and if he's tied up in a net, or manicles, how is he casting?! To me, if the mage could 'choose what goes', then why bother saying he has a 'weight limit', as he could always just decide to NOT Take what overweights him. If the wizard and an opponent have the same initiative (and attack roles succeed), would the opponent teleport with the wizard? It occurred to me that if the wizard is unable to choose, enemies could teleport with the wizard. The spellcaster is able to teleport a maximum weight of 250 pounds, plus an additional 150 pounds for each level of experience above the 10th (a 13th-level wizard can teleport up to 700 pounds). ![]() Here is the relevant part of the spell description: If the weight limit is exceeded because 10 people are touching the wizard, then the spell either doesn't work or the wizard is able to choose who teleports with them. I mainly got the idea with the weight limit. I always interpreted the spell to involve a certain amount of choice as to what is teleported, though I admit there's nothing in the spell description that says that. If someone casts Teleport while tied up, do they stayed tied up when they arrive at their destination? We also discussed scenarios where the person is in a net and in manacles. Hi everyone! There was a discussion in one of my groups and I wanted to see what people here thought.
